How to teach bay parking, forward and reverse
Watch a learner on their first attempt at a bay and you can usually name the problem before they’ve finished: they end up straddling a line, nose pointing off at ten degrees, and their instinct is to correct with the steering when the car is already stopped. They’ve treated the bay as a target to aim the bonnet at, which is exactly what it isn’t. Bay parking, forward and reverse, is one of the four manoeuvres the DVSA can set at the driving test, and it’s usually done in the test centre car park itself. This guide is about how to teach bay parking so the car ends up straight, central, and inside the lines every time, with observation the examiner is happy to watch.
The two versions look similar and are marked the same way, but they demand different things from the pupil, and most instructors teach them in the wrong order.
Reverse bay is harder, and here’s the honest reason
Ask a new pupil which they’d rather do and they’ll pick forward every time — you can see where you’re going. That instinct is exactly why reverse bay is the harder skill to build and the one worth more of your lesson time.
The difficulty isn’t the reversing. It’s that you are steering the car into a space you are looking away from. Going forward, the bay fills the windscreen and the feedback is instant — the pupil sees the car drifting and corrects. Going backward, the space is behind their shoulder, the mirrors show a slice of it at a time, and the car swings its tail into a slot the driver can only see in fragments. That’s a genuinely harder perceptual task, not just a nervier one.
The payoff is that a car reversed into a bay drives out forwards, nose-first, with a full view of what’s coming. The difficulty is front-loaded into the park, where the car is barely moving, instead of saved for the exit, where it isn’t. Sell that logic to the pupil early. A manoeuvre with a reason behind it is learned faster than one that feels like a hoop.
Reference points work — but they have to be the pupil’s own
Every instructor has their reference points: the moment a particular bay line appears in the door mirror, the spot where the door pillar lines up with the third bay along, the point of turn. They work brilliantly. The mistake is handing yours to the pupil as gospel.
Reference points depend on the car and on the driver. Where a line appears in the mirror shifts with the pupil’s seat position, their height, how they set the mirror, and the geometry of your particular car — a point that’s dead reliable in your Corsa is meaningless in the next car they drive. A pupil who has memorised your markers has learned your car; a pupil who has learned to find markers has learned to park.
So teach the method, not the marker:
“Reverse in slowly, and tell me the exact moment the far line of your bay appears in the door mirror. That moment is yours — remember what it looked like, because that’s your point of turn from now on.”
Let them discover it, name it out loud, and prove it by repeating it. Do the same for the point where they straighten. It takes one lesson longer than dictating your own numbers and it’s the difference between a pupil who can park anywhere and one who freezes the first time they sit in a hire car. Little and often, and the dry-steering question
Bay parking is the classic little and often manoeuvre. It’s low-speed, repeatable, and quick to reset, so a pupil can get six or seven genuine attempts into the last ten minutes of a lesson, week after week. That spacing beats a single hour-long parking marathon — the skill lands deeper when it’s revisited than when it’s crammed. Slot two or three bays into the end of lessons over a month and it quietly becomes automatic.
The recurring debate is dry steering — turning the wheel while the car is stationary. Mechanically it’s harder on the tyres and the steering, and some instructors ban it outright on those grounds; most treat it as something to avoid where reasonable rather than a fault that will cost a test.
The teaching point matters more than the verdict. A pupil who dry-steers is usually doing it because their steering and their movement have come uncoupled — they’ve stopped, thought, and then turned. The fix isn’t to nag “don’t dry steer”; it’s to get the steering happening while the car creeps. Slow the car right down rather than stopping it, so there’s always a little movement for the steering to bite into. Teach the creep and the dry steering mostly disappears on its own.
A method for the reverse bay
Give the pupil a repeatable shape, in plain steps, and let their own reference points fill in the specifics:
- Position. Drive past the bays and set up so the car is roughly the width of a bay-and-a-half out from the row, far enough forward that there’s room to swing the tail in. The exact starting spot is one of the reference points they’ll refine.
- Observe before you move. Full all-round check — mirrors, blind spots, over both shoulders through the back. Nothing moves until the space and the surroundings are clear.
- Reverse and find the line. Back slowly, watching the door mirror on the side you’re parking. The point of turn is the moment their chosen bay line appears — their marker, not yours.
- Steer into the bay. Full lock as they reach the point of turn, keeping the car creeping so the steering stays loaded. Now the pupil switches focus to both mirrors, reading the bay lines coming level on each side.
- Straighten and centre. As the car comes square in the bay, straighten the wheels and adjust so the gaps left and right are even. A glance over the shoulder confirms depth — far enough in, not on the line behind.
- Check and secure. Stop when central and inside the lines, secure the car, and take a proper look to confirm before anyone relies on it.
Keep observation threaded through every step, not saved for the end. The examiner marks control and observation as two separate things on the same manoeuvre — a technically perfect park with the eyes glued to one mirror still picks up a fault.
Forward bay: easy in, tricky out
Forward bay flips the difficulty. Driving in nose-first is the part pupils find simple and reference points are easy — the bay’s right there in the windscreen. The manoeuvre isn’t finished when the car’s in the bay. It’s finished when the car’s safely back out — and reversing out is where the marks are lost.
Reversing out of a bay is a genuine blind-spot problem. The cars parked either side wall the driver in, so they’re reversing blind into a lane where other cars, and pedestrians, cross behind them. The view opens up only as the car emerges, by which point they may already be in someone’s path. Teach the exit as its own skill, with its own discipline:
- Look before you move, and keep looking. All-round observation before reversing, then eyes moving throughout — not one check and go. The picture changes as the nose clears the neighbouring cars.
- Ease back and pause. Come out slowly enough to stop, and build in a deliberate pause as the rear of the car reaches the point where the through-lane becomes visible. That pause is where the pedestrian gets seen.
- Reassess before committing to the turn. Once the tail is out and the view is open, take a fresh look up the lane before steering round and driving off.
The pupil who nails the drive-in and then reverses out looking over one shoulder has learned half a manoeuvre. Make the exit the headline of the lesson, not the afterthought.
The faults that fail, and how to fix them
Every one of these is common, and every one has a cause worth treating rather than just flagging:
- Ending up shallow or at an angle. Usually a point-of-turn taken too early or too late, or a stop-then-steer habit. Rebuild the reference point and keep the car creeping so the steering stays live.
- Parking on the line. The pupil is watching one mirror and ignoring the other. Get them reading both bay lines as the car comes in — the aim is even gaps, not one good side.
- No observation, especially on the exit. The single most avoidable serious fault. Drill the all-round check and the pause for pedestrians until it’s reflex, forward and reverse alike.
- Steering the parked car. Correcting with the wheel after the car’s stopped. Fix the approach so it lands right, rather than papering over it with a stationary heave on the wheel.
- Rushing because the examiner’s watching. Test nerves collapse the timing. Practise the manoeuvre to the same unhurried rhythm every time so the habit holds when the pressure’s on.
